Helping relationship by a sexologist

Helping Relationship

Short-term support to get through a difficult period, manage a crisis or improve your relationship skills — offered by a sexologist with an OPSQ permit.

The helping relationship with a sexologist

The sexology helping relationship is a psychosocial support approach that addresses issues experienced in the present. A helping relationship approach aims to develop concrete tools to deal with everyday problems. It is generally a shorter- or medium-term work than a sex-psychotherapeutic approach.

It is possible to consult individually or as a couple. A sexologist with a bachelor’s degree in sexology and having obtained their license to practice from the Ordre Professionnel des Sexologues du Québec (OPSQ) can offer counselling services.

Reasons for consultation

In case of need of psychotherapy

As part of the clinic’s services, we are aware that there can sometimes be significant delays before being able to meet with a psychotherapist. This is why counselling services are offered to you to have access to follow-up to manage a more difficult period or a crisis while waiting to be able to start a more in-depth follow-up. This approach may also be sufficient to meet your immediate needs and allow you to move forward, sometimes without the need for psychotherapy, depending on the needs that lead you to consult.

Frequent reasons for consultation

What is psychotherapy by a sexologist & psychotherapist?

To practice psychotherapy, your sexologist-psychotherapist must have completed his master’s degree in sexology and have obtained a psychotherapist’s permit from the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec (OPQ). Clinical training makes it possible to evaluate sexual disorders and determine their causes as well as the means to treat the difficulties. Generally, psychotherapy requires a more regular follow-up (every week or 2 weeks) while the helping relationship can be more punctual. Sex-psychotherapy will explore the nature of your personality and the relational and sexual issues through a clinical approach. Psychotherapy can take between 10 and 20 sessions, or even more in some cases.
