Sometimes we talk about intimacy when we imagine two or more people having sex together (e.g., “My wife and I had a moment of intimacy last night”). It can also be defined by nudity or solitary sexual practices such as masturbation (e.g., “I need my privacy when I want to change clothes in my room”). In addition, it also refers to the genitals (e.g. “These are my private parts”).

Each of these examples presents a self-disclosure or lack thereof. When we share a part of ourselves with a person, we reveal who we are. There are a variety of types and degrees of intimacy such as emotional, sexual, physical, professional, etc. We can show our naked body, disclose sexual fantasiesdreamspreferences and also share our deep feelings towards a person. For most people, sexual intimacy is the hardest topic to reveal to others. Our sexuality is the basis of our personality, because it demonstrates our deepest fears, our strengths, our vulnerability, which demonstrates who we really are as individuals.

Intimacy is not…

There is a misconception in our society that intimacy is always a pleasant, joyful, romantic, and loving aspect between two romantic partners. This view of things is completely wrong! As we get to know our partner, we begin to realize that each person has not only beautiful qualities and strengths, but also limitations, strange peculiarities, vulnerability, emotional and sexual difficulties. As much as we want to accept everything about our partner, especially in long-term relationships, this is impossible. In fact, we can’t actually know our partner at the beginning of a relationship, even though we may feel that way. We know a person through the experiences we go through together and a short-term relationship does not allow us to really know a person. We tend to project and imagine who our partner is as a person, without really knowing.

During the romantic relationship, the members of the couple change over time as well. We are not static and immobile in our personality. We think, we evolve and we change our perspectives and values. In fact, we change our minds particularly often. So, sexual intimacy is not just the magical moments when we share a moment of positive and deep connection with our partner. It also includes getting to know our loved one on levels that we don’t necessarily appreciate, or disagree with, and that doesn’t validate our perception of sexuality. Being intimate also consists of telling our partner that our sex life is not particularly pleasant or pleasant or we no longer desire our partner. It is to admit that we do not like the way he or she touches or seduces us. Being intimate included, saying the good as well as the bad and remaining honest and honest with yourself and the other.

Inevitable conflicts

It is impossible not to find differences in all couples in love. Sometimes these differences are irritating. We can hate them or consider them as a nuisance that interferes with our satisfaction in the couple. They can even call into question the viability of our relationship. We can’t get along with our significant other on all points, our sexual fantasies, the way we seduce or initiate a sexual relationship.

This dynamic inevitably leads to conflict in a relationship, which forces us to make a decision to get through it or avoid it. Intimacy plays a big role in these circumstances. People who do not have an emotional balance will perceive these differences and conflicts as a threat to the couple and its stability.
