Steps forward

Over the past few decades, society has undergone a significant shift in its perception of masculinity. The old rigid stereotypes that dictated how a man should behave and conform to traditional norms of manhood are being challenged. Today’s new criteria of masculinity are emerging, reflecting a broader and more inclusive understanding of what it means to be a man in the modern world.

A challenge to toxic

masculinityToxic masculinity, characterized by aggressive behaviors, repression of emotions, and excessive dominance, has long been predominant in our society. However, new generations of men are increasingly aware of the detrimental effects of this toxic masculinity on their mental well-being, relationships, and society as a whole. They therefore seek to redefine the criteria of masculinity by getting rid of restrictive patterns.

Emotional expression and vulnerability:

One of the key aspects of the new masculinity criteria is the emphasis on emotional expression and vulnerability. Men are encouraged to acknowledge and openly express their emotions, share their vulnerabilities, and seek support when needed. This promotes more authentic relationships, better mental health, and more effective communication in all areas of life.

Gender equality and inclusion

The new masculinity criteria also emphasize gender equality and inclusion. Men are increasingly aware of their role in the fight against sexism, patriarchy and gender-based discrimination. They are actively committed to supporting women, challenging gender norms and promoting a more equal society. Solidarity and collaboration between men and women are now seen as signs of strength rather than weakness.

Autonomy and free choice

The new criteria of masculinity recognize the importance of autonomy and free choice for men. They encourage men to be authentic and pursue their own passions and interests, whether or not they fit the traditional expectations of society. Men are free to choose their careers, hobbies, and lifestyles, without feeling limited by predefined roles. This promotes personal development and contributes to a more diverse and balanced society.

Steps back

All these changes are useful and beneficial for our society, but it is rather utopian. I do not mean to say that this is not achievable or highly desirable. On the other hand, some of the ways we get there are sometimes questionable. The bashing and ridicule of men, virility and the responsibility entirely placed on the shoulders of men have unintended and unwanted impacts of this social movement.

Some men adhere to it and adapt to the new reality that we are trying to create. On the other hand, some become rigid in their role of masculinity or others eliminate all traces of old patterns without assessing the harmful impacts of these on their own well-being. There are also women who resist these new definitions of masculinity, who adhere in part or in whole to the more conservative model.

We must then take into consideration and evaluate the impact of the processing methods we use to achieve our goals.

We all want to improve

Today’s new standards of masculinity are redefining traditional norms and expectations imposed on men. Toxic masculinity is being challenged, and men are being encouraged to embrace emotional expression, vulnerability, gender equality, autonomy, and free choice. This development contributes to a more open, inclusive and balanced society, where men are free to define themselves rather than by restrictive stereotypes. It is also up to each person to choose the masculinity that suits them and to recognize the impacts on themselves and others.
